DINNER CONCERTS

CHUCK BRODSKY
Performed Saturday, November 20th, 2004
This down to earth musical storyteller, with his dry, barb-witted social commentary combined with a deep underlying compassion, knows that the best stories are the little things in the lives of everyday people trying to muddle through with some grace. His great gift as a writer is to infuse these stories with humanity and humor, making them resonate profoundly with his listeners. His spoken introductions to his songs can be as spellbinding as his colorful lyrics, which he brings to life with a well-travelled voice and a delivery that's natural and conversational. His groove-oriented strumming and fingerpicking draw on influences from the mountains of western North Carolina where he now lives, and from lots of different good old traditional folk stuff of all kinds.

ARTISAN
Performed Sunday September 19th, 2004
Artisan is Britain's favourite folk trio....and certainly has become ours. Their concerts transport you to a world that exists only within the magic of their tightrope taught harmonies and soul satisfying, often belly laughable humour. We first heard Artisan in Lunenburg where they are voted as one of the all-time, best-loved acts EVER to appear at Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival. Artisan are Hilary Spencer, Jacey Bedford and Brian Bedford. They are three friends who decided to sing together for fun way back in 1984 in deepest darkest Yorkshire. "It was pure luck," says Jacey, "Our voices blended so well, right from the start, that we had lots of encouragement from friends and that prompted us to work really hard. Within a couple of years we were being invited to festivals and events all over Britain. By 1988 we were getting so much work that we either had to give up singing or give up the day-jobs. Finally in 1989 we became full-time vocal harmonists." Since they hit the road they've taken their own brand of harmony and humour round Britain, Europe, Canada, the USA, Australia and Hong Kong. They've played venues both large and small, from folk clubs in upstairs pub rooms to open-air festivals with audiences of thousands. Artisan's special talent is making friends with an audience.

JOHN GRACIE
Performed Saturday, September 4th,2004
This three-time ECMA Male Artist of the Year has taken his music around the globe with live performances in New York, Tokyo, Britain, Zurich, Amsterdam, Munich, Iceland, Bermuda, Nashville and now Berwick, Nova Scotia! He is a talented songwriter, and his original pieces are most often his fan favourites. The influence of the sea is felt in John's earlier compositions and songs like Seabird's Cry and Nova Scotia Lullabye are often chosen to be representative of Maritime life. John has received international acclaim and has many accolades and accomplishments to his credit. He remains humble and true to his roots deep within the coalmining community of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. The pull of the Atlantic tide influences his creativity. He credits the support and encouragment of his mother and childhood music teacher for his determination to share that music which has taken him across the globe and into the international media.

The MacLean Sisters

With their unique blend of sweet harmonies and contemporary pop sound, sisters Rachel and Mary MacLean are easily considered two of Canada's top female vocalists. As children singing in small churches to performing internationally, their rich vocals and musical versatility have allowed them to share the stage with such gifted musicians as Don McLean, The Rankins, The Barra MacNeils, and John Allan Cameron.

Bob Snider
Performed Sunday October 26th, 2003
Singer-songwriter Bob Snider has played on the street and in the concert hall. He's been called a "national treasure", a "living legend" and "author of some of the best Canadian songs of the decade". After a hiatus from performing and recording, Bob Snider returns with a new album "Stealin' Home". Produced by David Baxter, the new CD contains 13 new songs that are quintessentially Bob. Songs that are direct, beautiful, sometimes quirky, sometimes funny but above all, songs that go straight to the heart. Bob's songs have been covered by a who's who of Canadian musicians including Ashley MacIsaac, Meryn Cadell and the Leslie Spit Tree-O. His earlier recordings include two cassettes, "Live at the Free Times Cafe" and "You" and two CDs, "Caterwaul and Doggerel" and "Words and Pictures". "Poetreason", a Bob Snider tribute concert recording dating back to 1996, includes performances by the likes of The Barenaked Ladies, Change of Heart and Moxy Fruvous, to name a few. Bob is an exceptional live performer with his warmth and wit putting just the right off-beat spin on his live shows.

Nancy White
Performed Friday October 3rd, 2003
Nancy's new album, Stickers on Fruit is a jolly mixture of the whimsical ("Les Belles Belles Fesses") and the thoughtful ("River Mend my Heart"). It's on the Borealis label, as are her two previous cd's, Gaelic Envy and Nancy White: Unexpected. Nancy sings at comedy festivals (most recently Moncton and Winnipeg) as well as folk festivals, gives lots of concerts, and writes to order. One of her best gigs this year was a comedy double bill in Toronto with possibly the most hilarious man on earth, Roger James. This year she also narrated a film about the founding of the CCF, sang (and wrote) several World War 1 songs for "The History Project" on CBC TV, and had a song ("Hockey Widow") included on a compilation cd called World¹s Best Hockey Songs.Vol.1. She recently wrote and taped a song called "Big Science" for the 42nd anniversary of "The Nature of Things", to be broadcast on CBC Nov.28

Cheryl Gaudet with Cathy Porter and Brian Bourne
Performed Sunday August 17th, 2003
Music is a passion that singer songwriter Cheryl loves to share with other artists, be it co-writing, performing or accompanying. She has formed a very cool trio with two of the most talented musicians anywhere. Cathy Porter, formerly of the Rose Vaughan Trio and Dave Carmichael Band plays percussion, keys and flute and Brian Bourne, bassist and Chapman Stick player from Rawlin's Cross bring their expertise and artistry to Cheryl's unique melodies and percusive grooves. Together they create a hip, organic blend of music rich with harmonies and musical texture. Cathy and Cheryl also get to back Brian on his original brew of stick inspired tunes. Throw in some relaxed, off beat humor and it's a show that'll leave you grinning inside.

Since starting to perform together Bill and Sue have played clubs, concerts and festivals in Canada and the U.S. Recent highlights include a slot at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in summer 2002. Their debut album as a duo "Red Shoes" is due out in spring 2003.
